Master Cruise Consultant or Counsellor?
Two titles, two regions, one industry body — and the specialisms behind both.
Build Your Cruise CareerSearch for the designation and you will meet two titles: Master Cruise Counsellor and master cruise consultant. Both are CLIA designations — in different parts of the world.
CLIA Designations by Region
| Region | Levels named by CLIA | Top level |
|---|---|---|
| North America | Certified Cruise Counsellor, Accredited Cruise Counsellor, Master Cruise Counsellor, Elite Cruise Counsellor, plus Travel Agency Executive | Elite Cruise Counsellor |
| Australasia | Accredited Cruise Consultant, Ambassador Cruise Consultant, Master Cruise Consultant | Master Cruise Consultant |
| UK & Ireland | An introduction to cruise sales, then Ambassador status, then Master certification | Master |
In other words, a master cruise consultant is the top tier of CLIA’s Australasian program, while in North America MCC is the third of four counsellor levels. Each region sets its own requirements, so a designation from one program does not automatically match another. CLIA’s certification programs page links to each region.
Which Title Should You Pursue?
Follow the program for the market where you are a CLIA member and where your clients book. An advisor in the United States or Canada works through the North American counsellor levels; an advisor in Australia or New Zealand through the consultant levels. If you move between markets, ask CLIA how your existing designation is recognised before you start again.
The spelling question is simpler: CLIA uses “Counsellor” in its North American titles, while American clients often type “counselor.” Either spelling points to the same MCC designation, so use CLIA’s official form on certificates and signatures and do not worry about how clients search for it.
When you describe your credential, use the exact title your region awards. Clients and suppliers may look it up, and the two titles are not interchangeable even though they sound alike.
The Specialisms Behind a Master-Level Advisor
Whatever the region calls it, master-level cruise expertise is built from specialisms. In North America, CLIA’s certificate programs mark out seven of them:
Luxury Cruise Travel
Small-ship and luxury lines, suite clients and the service they expect.
Family Cruise Travel
Multi-generation families, kids’ programs and connecting cabins.
Accessible Cruise Travel
Guests with mobility, hearing, vision or other needs.
Cruise Groups
Building, contracting and managing group space.
Meetings & Events at Sea
Conferences, incentives and celebrations on board.
RiverView
River cruising, a different product from ocean ships.
Public Relations for Your Cruise Business
Getting your business noticed.

Each of these programs counts as 50 credits toward the MCC, either as a mandatory or an elective component, so the choice shapes both your certification plan and the clients you become known for.
Choosing two or three that match the clients you already have is usually smarter than collecting all seven. Where your clients go after booking matters too: the network’s Shore Activities and Accessible Ocean Cruises guides show the consumer side of two of these specialisms.
