Master Cruise Counselor
CLIA’s Master Cruise Counsellor designation in plain English: what it takes, where it leads and how to keep it.
Build Your Cruise CareerWhat a Master Cruise Counselor Is
A master cruise counselor is a travel advisor who has earned the Master Cruise Counsellor (MCC) designation from Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). CLIA calls it its “distinguished” certification: the third of four cruise counsellor levels in North America, aimed at advisors who are already selling cruises well and want to prove expert-level knowledge.
The letters are earned, not bought. Alongside advanced coursework, the MCC asks for real experience that CLIA checks: stateroom bookings, ship inspections, two longer cruises of your own on different lines, and a letter confirming your agency affiliation. That mix is what gives the designation its weight with clients and cruise-line partners.
| MCC at a glance (enrollments from 2022) | |
|---|---|
| Prerequisites | Active CLIA Individual Agent Membership, plus a completed ACC (or entry via CLIA’s experiential learning route) |
| Time allowed | Two years from enrollment |
| Mandatory credits | 90, from case studies, Cruise360, a CLIA live or virtual learning event and CLIA certificate programs |
| Elective credits | 40, from a wider list including CLIA courses and partner training |
| Ship inspections | 3, on different ships |
| Stateroom bookings | 32, through a CLIA member agency |
| Personal cruises | 2 of 7+ nights, on two different lines and two different kinds of itinerary |
| Affiliation | One letter of verification from your host agency (or business records) |
Every requirement in full, with CLIA’s fine print, is on our MCC requirements page.
Where MCC Sits on the Ladder

Before: CCC and ACC

After: Elite (ECC)

Beyond the Letters: Advanced Cruise Expertise
What makes an MCC different in practice is depth. The certificate programs that count toward the designation push an advisor into specialist territory — luxury cruising, family travel, accessible cruising, groups, meetings and events at sea, river cruising and public relations for a cruise business. Two longer cruises on different lines, and inspections of three different ships, turn study into first-hand comparison.
The result is an advisor who can explain why one line suits a client better than another, plan a group, and handle a guest with mobility needs without guessing. That is the standard to aim for even before you enroll.
It also shows in how an MCC talks to clients: fewer brochure phrases, more first-hand detail about which cabins are quiet, which ports need an early start and which ship suits a first-timer.

Getting to the Point Where MCC Makes Sense
An MCC needs a steady flow of cruise bookings — 32 of them within the completion rules — which means a working cruise-selling business first. Be a Travel Agent helps advisors set that up with a host agency, training and support, whether you start part-time or go straight for a full-time career; its Career Fast Track is the full-time route.
Master Cruise Counselor: Common Questions
Is it Master Cruise Counselor or Master Cruise Counsellor?
Both spellings refer to the same CLIA designation. CLIA writes “Counsellor”; many American advisors and searches use “counselor.” The initials are MCC either way.
Can I go straight to MCC?
Normally you must complete the Accredited Cruise Counsellor (ACC) level first. CLIA’s overview also names an MCC Experiential Learning Program as the exception; its details are published to CLIA members, so check with CLIA whether you qualify.
Does MCC let me sell cruises I could not sell before?
No. It is a professional designation, not a license or booking credential. What it changes is how much you know and how clients and partners see your expertise.
