CLIA Certification Renewal

Your designation stays current as long as your membership does. Here is what to watch.

There is no exam to retake. CLIA certification renewal is about one thing: keeping your CLIA Individual Agent Membership active after you graduate.

How CLIA Certification Renewal Works

For each counsellor level, CLIA states that once an Individual Agent Member graduates, they must renew their Individual Agent Membership to maintain the certification. Let the membership lapse and the designation is no longer maintained. The membership also carries the CLIA EMBARC ID, which CLIA describes as the credential for its member benefits and recognition.

Renew membership each year

Membership runs on an annual cycle. CLIA’s page said in late October 2026 that all 2026 memberships stay active through December 31, 2026.

Watch the enrollment window

The same page said Individual Agent Membership enrollment was closed for the moment, with 2027 enrollment dates to be announced. Watch for CLIA’s notice so you do not miss it.

Separate memberships

CLIA points out that an agency’s membership does not make its advisors members; each advisor renews their own.

Records Worth Keeping

  • Your Certification Logbook for each level, since requirements vary by enrollment year.
  • Course certificates and quiz results, with dates.
  • Booking confirmations used for each level, so nothing is counted twice.
  • Ship inspection records and itineraries of personal cruises.
  • Your current verification letter from your host agency.

A Simple Renewal Routine

Put your membership renewal date in your calendar with a reminder a month ahead, and another for whenever CLIA announces the next enrollment window. Check that your contact details with CLIA are current so notices reach you. Once a year, update your certification folder and confirm that any agency letter on file still reflects your affiliation.

Keeping Your Knowledge Current, Too

Renewal keeps the letters; it does not keep you current. New ships, new destinations and changing policies mean a master cruise counselor keeps learning anyway — cruise-line programs, CLIA courses and inspections all help. If you are working toward the next level, the same activities can count as credits there.

Contact details and current membership news are on CLIA’s North America membership page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to earn continuing-education credits for CLIA certification renewal?

CLIA’s published requirement for keeping a counsellor designation is renewing your Individual Agent Membership. Check your Logbook and CLIA’s current terms for any additional conditions that apply to your enrollment year.

What happens if my membership lapses?

CLIA states the graduate must renew membership to maintain the certification, so a lapse puts the designation at risk. If it happens, contact CLIA’s membership team promptly to ask about reinstatement.

Does moving to a new host agency affect my designation?

Your Individual Agent Membership is your own, separate from any agency’s membership. If you are still working toward a level, you may need a new verification letter from the new host.
